By Job Mogaka

Campus radio stations are the in thing in many journalism and mass communication related courses. Universities are on a daily basis expanding their facilities and injecting more flexible courses to attract students and later churn out quality graduates who are competent. In the recent past, it has now become easier for universities to open and operate radio stations, most of which are operated by media students. Me being one of them. They are a golden opportunity for students to gain practical industry experience on their media field while still in campus.
Below are some of the top campus radio stations in Kenya.

1.ECN Radio
ECN radio is a product of KIMC(Kenya institute of mass communication) and the current title holder of The Campus Radio Of The Year. ECN is 100% student managed and is one of the most successful campus radio in Kenya. At ECN, they have hosted more than 75 reknown public figures and still counting. They are currently the top campus radio in Kenya.

2.KU Radio
KU Radio is one of the best campus radio station in the country. With a radio frequency of 5kms radius, it serves students and the Kahawa community and further to places like Eastleigh and Embakasi.
With highly acclaimed campus shows like Campus Icon which features celebrities and influential personalities who have a positive impact to the young people in Kenyan Campuses, then Carribean Mashup, KU Drive and even Staftahi, KU Radio is fast rising to the top.

3.Shine FM
Shine FM was launched in 2003 and is run entirely by students from Daystar University. Its main aim is to provide a platform for communication students to sharpen their skills in presenting, production and news delivery.
ShineFM reaches Athi-river, Kitengela, Mlolongo, parts of Ngong, Kiserian, Kangemi, Machakos and Utawala and is one of the most listened to radio campus radio stations because of it’s huge broadcasting frequency.

4.USIU Radio
USIU Radio was launched in 2010 as a campus community radio with a major aim of helping the Mass Communication students to gain practical  experience. USIU Radio covers Kasarani and Roysambu and has an urban and trendy way of presenting it’s daily programmes.

5.Egerton Radio
Launched in 2013 with a major aim of shaping the opinions of the communities in the area so that they remain in favour of peace, considering the fact that we were heading to polls at that time, Egerton has rose from a mere community radio to one of the top campus radio stations in Kenya.

'6. Equator FM
This is a Maseno university based station which broadcasts on 98.1 FM on its surroundings. lt has gained a lot of popularity in the recent years due to its lively and entertaining shows. I have had an opportunity to personally interact with some of the Equator FM presenters and I love what they are doing on the Airwaves.

8 TYPES OF LECTURES FOUND IN KENYAN UNIVERSITIES

Campus life is fun, laughter, crazy and boring all in the same plate. If you are a campus student, or you were at some point back then, you can agree with me that attending classes isn’t all that fun. But what mostly determines how we feel about lessons is the lecturer teaching that unit. If a lecture is fun and lively then you can’t afford to miss it, but if the lecturer is hostile and boring …you have to debate with yourself thrice whether you should attend or not. Below is a list of the types of lectures in Kenyan universities. 1.Strict & Always Present Lecturer This one never misses a single lecture, not even if it is scheduled for 8PM – 11PM. Even though they may not lecture for the full duration, they try and exhaust what they wanted to teach that day. They don’t like people who use phones in classes, talk and giggle. 2.Present But a Don’t care Lecturer This one will come to class when he has a lesson, dictate for you the notes and leave. They don’t expound on anything...
